The Cabarrus County Republican Party has named Christopher Measmer, Chairman of the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners, to serve as Cabarrus County’s next State Senator.

In accordance with North Carolina General Statute § 163-11, the Cabarrus County Executive Committee of the Republican Party, duly composed of members residing within the 34th Senate District, has recommended to Governor Josh Stein the appointment of Christopher Allen Measmer, as the Republican to replace and complete the remainder of the unexpired term of the now-resigned Senator Newton in the 34th Senate District.

During the committee’s four-hour closed session, members conducted interviews with each candidate, followed by robust discussions and deliberations on Saturday, April 5, 2025. The Executive Committee emerged and voted unanimously to appoint Measmer as the next State Senator to represent Cabarrus County in the General Assembly in Raleigh.

“I am thrilled to see Chris be selected as our next State Senator,” said Lanny Lancaster, Chairman of Cabarrus County Republican Party. His presentation, resume, and seven years of experience serving all the residents of Cabarrus County were notable. During his tenure on the County Commission, Chris has been a champion for the taxpayers of Cabarrus County. He has never shied away from tackling challenging issues, and I look forward to seeing him serve out Senator Newton’s term at the General Assembly.”

“I would like to personally thank all the candidates who put their names forward for consideration,” said Jim Quick, Vice Chairman of the Cabarrus County Republican Party. Our Executive Committee considered an impressive list of men & women, including two former state representatives, a former chief district court judge, a mayor, a town council member, a chief financial officer, a former congressional candidate, a community organizer, and a county commissioner. The diverse pool of Republican candidates was impressive. They represented decades of service to the voters of Cabarrus County. Our committee thanks Senator Newton for his exemplary service, and we look forward to working with our newly appointed Senator in Raleigh.”

Chris Measmer is a Cabarrus County Commissioner with deep roots in the area, tracing his family lineage back to 1817. He graduated from Central Cabarrus High School and later earned a degree in Political Science from George Washington University. During his studies, Measmer gained firsthand experience with legislative projects on Capitol Hill alongside members of the U.S. Congress.

After graduation, he returned to Cabarrus County to help run the family business and has since become a second-generation business owner. His experience extends to serving on the statewide National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) board as Vice Chairman, where he advocates for the interests of small business owners.

Measmer's political career has focused on liberty and freedom for all. He also studied abroad in Greece and Italy, which deepened his appreciation for American freedoms. He is in his seventh year on the Cabarrus County Board of County Commissioners, where he currently serves as Chairman of the Commission.

He has previously served as Vice-Chairman and also served on multiple boards, including the Cabarrus Visitors Bureau, the Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County, the Cabarrus County Human Services Board, Cabarrus County Senior Center Board, past President of the Cabarrus Historic Society, Cabarrus County Republican Executive Committee, the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, the Cabarrus County Senior Center Board, and the Cabarrus County Child Protection and Fatality Team.

Following Saturday’s vote, the Republican Executive Committee notified Governor Josh Stein of their recommendation. The Governor has up to seven days to appoint Measmer to his new role as State Senator through 2026.
